Whether we call them: Mother, mum, mama, madre, mere, or mum, these people play a crucial role in the lives of so many people around the globe. As from 1st-13th May, VAP is joining forces with Global Giving to celebrate motherhood and recognize all mother figures in people’s lives. In this regard, donations raised through www.globalgiving.com/2221 as from 1st-13th May will go towards supporting and purchasing sanitary towels for all the young mothers involved in VAP programs. Global Giving will have $5,000 in bonus prizes. At the end of the campaign, the top 5 projects with the most funds raised and most unique donors will get bonus prizes of $1,000, $800, $400, $200, $100 respectively. It has been a great rollercoaster ride ride for 19 years old Mary Wangari who has just joined the ‘VAP Achievers’ club after having undergone all VAP’s programs right from the foundations of VAP’s programs, football based life skills and into Employment and Entrepreneurship program where she focused on a catering course and eventually graduated and finally got a job placement with PrideInn Hotel based in westlands part of Nairobi. The PrideInn hotels consist of 3 brands namely: PrideInn Express, PrideInn Business and PrideInn Plus. “Am happy that football is a life changing tool for both on and off the field.” Said Mary who also featured in the last ‘Wasichana Wacheze’ football league 3rd edition in 2017.
As part of familiarization to VAP’s community programs, VAP played host to the standard chartered bank’s corporate affairs manager Mrs, Susan Njoroge.The more than 2 hours visit was well utilized as she was taken through staff introduction, programming, monitoring and evaluation processes. The successful meeting forged many ways of the two institutions working and engaging each other for the benefit of the community through various initiatives.VAP is proudly associated with SCB as they continue the journey of changing the lives of young people around the communities.
Despite enjoying their precious school holiday time, Skillz Kenya HIV participants were kept busy and fully engaged into the program in their respective communities. Skillz coaches divided themselves into different groups reaching out to participants from every corner and community with HIV awareness messages. Throughout the school holiday season over 500 youth were awarded with certificates as a confirmation of becoming fully certified HIV ambassadors in their communities. The graduates are poised to conduct both formal and informal HIV sessions with their peers, families and members of the community.
As they are gearing up to make an exit of their vocational training course, the first cohort of the 2018 were engaged into a 10 days intensive business training and research of their respective courses. Led by experienced business training professionals, the participants were taken through various topics surrounding business set up, savings, budgeting, customer relationship tips, book keeping, and how to access small loans etc. Participants were also trained on job search and job retention skills.At the end of the training,each participant would be expected to draft and present a business plan to a panel of judges comprised of different professionals who would go through the proposals and award the best plans with some capital funds to start up their respective businesses.
22 years old Mandela has been a true community football role model both on and off the football pitch. As a footballer who plays for Bidco football club that features in the nationwide football league, a second tier league, his character, leadership and captaincy skills have been exemplary of great inspiration to his fellow teammates and the community around. Mandela has been so passionate in Skillz Kenya program that creates awareness of HIV through football based manual, and as a Skillz coach he balances well his time of going for program implementation and for football practice with his team.
